The contribution of brown dwarfs to the local mass budget of the Galaxy

چکیده

Based on the recent discoveries of free floating brown dwarfs we derive estimates of the local mass density of this population of objects. Mass density estimates from various surveys span the range 0.03 to 0.005 M pc−3. These estimates are compared with the local mass densities of the other constituents of the galactic disk and, in particular, with the dynamically determined total local mass density. We argue that brown dwarfs might indeed contribute significantly to the local mass budget, but that a local mass density as high as 0.03 M pc−3 as suggested by Ruiz et al. (1997) is rather unlikely.

Contribution of brown dwarfs and white dwarfs to recent microlensing observations and to the halo mass budget

We examine the recent results of the MACHO collaboration towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (Alcock et al. 1996) in terms of a halo brown dwarf or white dwarf population. The possibility for most of the microlensing events to be due to brown dwarfs is totally excluded by large-scale kinematic properties. The white dwarf scenario is examined in details in the context of the most recent white dwa...

Towards a consistent model of the Galaxy I. Kinematic properties, star counts and microlensing observations

We examine the most recent observational constraints arising from i) small-scale and large-scale Galactic dynamical properties, ii) star counts of population I and II stars at faint magnitude and iii) microlensing experiments towards the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Galactic centre. From these constraints, we determine the halo and disk stellar mass functions and stellar content down to the b...

The galactic population of white dwarfs

The contribution of white dwarfs of the different Galactic populations to the stellar content of our Galaxy is only poorly known. Some authors claim a vast population of halo white dwarfs, which would be in accordance with some investigations of the early phases of Galaxy formation claiming a top-heavy initial–mass–function. Here, I present a model of the population of white dwarfs in the Milky...

Theory of Low Mass Stars, Brown Dwarfs and Extra-solar Giant Planets Gilles Chabrier and Isabelle Baraffe

Accurate modeling of the mechanical and thermal properties of very-lowmass stars (VLMS), Brown Dwarfs (BD) and Extra-solar Giant Planets (EGP) is of prior importance for a wide range of physical and astrophysical problems, from the fundamental physics point of view to the astrophysical and cosmological implications. They provide natural laboratories to test the different theories, equations of ...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
